Overview

In today's fast-paced world, staying connected with loved ones through thoughtful gestures can be challenging. My college classmate and I recognized this need and envisioned Significard: a platform that combines AI with real artists to create personalized, eco-friendly greeting cards that arrive on time, every time. This case study outlines our journey from concept to launch, highlighting the user-centered design process we employed to create a seamless and engaging experience for our target audience.

Understanding the Problem

Traditional methods of sending greeting cards, like store visits or impersonal texts, were failing to meet the needs of our target demographic: busy millennials who value personal connections but struggle with time constraints. Market research revealed that this group desires a convenient yet meaningful way to express their sentiments.

Our competitive analysis showed that while some online card companies existed, they lacked the personalization and automation that our users sought.

Users and Audience

Our primary audience is millennials who value relationships and want to express themselves through thoughtful gestures but lack the time or resources to do so consistently. These users:
Appreciate the sentimentality of greeting cards but find traditional methods inconvenient.
Are tech-savvy and comfortable with online services.
Desire personalization and unique card designs.
Value convenience and automation to simplify their lives.

Scope

  • Personalized Card Matching: A quiz to capture user and recipient preferences, powered by AI and curated by artists.
  • Automated Scheduling and Delivery: Users set preferences once, and Significard handles the rest.
  • Recipient Management: A dashboard to store and organize recipient details and preferences.
  • Eco-Friendly Materials: A commitment to sustainability in card production.
  • Responsive Website and Native App: Accessible across devices for maximum convenience.

Constraints

  • Limited Resources: As a startup, we had to work efficiently with our budget and team size.
  • Technical Complexity: Developing the AI-powered matching algorithm and integrating it with artist curation required careful planning and development.
  • Market Education: The concept of automated, personalized card-sending was relatively new, so we needed to educate our target audience on its benefits.

Process

1. User Research: We conducted surveys and interviews to validate our assumptions about user needs and pain points.

2. Feature Prioritization:
Based on research insights, we prioritized features that would deliver the most value to users while aligning with our business goals.
3. Design and Prototyping: We iterated on wireframes and prototypes, incorporating user feedback at each stage. We focused on creating an intuitive and enjoyable quiz experience, a user-friendly dashboard, and seamless navigation across devices.
4. User Testing: We conducted usability testing with our target audience, gathering feedback on the quiz, card selection process, and overall user experience.
5. Refinement and Launch: Based on testing insights, we refined the design and functionality of the app. We launched the website and mobile app, emphasizing clear messaging and educational content to onboard new users.

Outcomes and Learnings
